The Battle of Shiloh, also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, was a major Civil War battle fought in southwestern Tennessee on April 6–7, 1862. Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant defeated the Confederates under Albert Sidney Johnston and P. G. T. Beauregard. The battle allowed Union troops to penetrate the Confederate interior and resulted in unprecedented carnage, with the human toll being the greatest of any war on the American continent up to that date. It was a bloody and decisive engagement for control of the Tennessee River and Corinth, with large casualties on both sides.
