Class IV trailer hitches are designed for serious towing, capable of handling large boat trailers, utility trailers, and full-size campers. They are typically found on larger trucks and SUVs, can handle up to 12,000 lbs of towing and up to 1,200 lbs of tongue weight, and usually have 2" receiver openings. They can also be used with a weight distribution system for added stability and strength.

Class V trailer hitches are the highest-rated hitch class, with a maximum towing capability of up to 20,000 lbs and a maximum tongue weight of up to 2,700 lbs. They are designed for the heaviest recreational and commercial towing applications and represent the maximum capacity in conventional receiver-style hitches.
