Not sure how to break the social ice? Share a dozen of these eggs with someone and you’ll be deep in conversation in no time 🥰 🌿 These richly colored Marans eggs have a story to tell — one of biodiversity and the incredible variety that exists in the chicken-keeping world beyond what we see in grocery stores. They naturally invite the question, “Why have I never seen eggs like that?” and gently inspire people to think more deeply about their food sources. 🌿 To us, these eggs are little ambass

✨Predator Proofing Your Coop & Run✨ . There is a whole host of different materials you can use to keep predators out of your coop and run, I will never use “chicken wire” it is far too large of a weave and small predators and rodents just walk on through! ✨ Depending on the project and how long I am wanting the area of the structure to last I go between hardware cloth and the aviary wire I showed you here in the video. Both have their virtues! ✨ Another thing I always ask myself when working on

🧬Genetic Testing🧬 . Did you know that with a single freshly plucked feather it is possible to do some dna testing on chickens?! 🤯. 🧬 This week I am testing every single one of our adult Isbar along with all of our upcoming birds for our 2026 season to ensure they are homozygous for the blue egg laying gene meaning roosters would pass on the genetics and hens would always lay a shade of greenish bluish and never cream or tan. 🧬 In the past this was a very long and expensive process that invo

🌿Rogue Hens🌿 . These two ladies are now happily moving about the barnyard, this is hands down one of my favorite parts of raising chickens. The sweet sounds and sight of mama hens with their chicks is so so sweet. 🌿 I always let them mother their own chicks but I watch from afar juuuuust to make sure all is well and it was a good thing I did because those last two cuties needed a little loving hand ❤️ 🌿 Have you had hens go rogue at huge place? . . . #broodyhens #hensandchicks #babychicks #a

🌿 A Key To Self Sufficiency 🌿 . I’ve seen mama Cochins share babies, but I have yet to see a rooster want to co-parent. I’m so curious to watch this unfold with Storm Cloud and our broody mama. 🌿 I used to have Silkies at the top of my “chickens to have in the apocalypse” list because they’re famously broody and can hatch and raise chicks without electricity or an incubator. This year, though, Cochins are moving to the top of my list as a favorite naturally broody breed for keeping a flock go

🐣A Rare Connection🐣 . I saved the email asking for a special needs chick thinking it would be some months before I would have a chick like that for the customer to raise but THE VERY NEXT DAY this chick was born. This kind of abnormality is rare, out of the tends of thousands of chicks I have hatched I can count on one hand how many times I have seen this. It was as if the sweet woman writing me the letter could feel this little being preparing itself to hatch into the world. What a blessing ❤

❤️A chicken love story ❤️ . Who am I to get in the way of love? 🥹 No matter how many times we tried to get the sweet Welsummer lady back with her flock she would pull a Houdini and magically appear back next to her silkie love. ❤️ We always put the physical, and emotional wellbeing of our birds first so now even though it makes zero practical sense, she is going to live out her days with her man and they will create these unique little love chicks. ❤️ Have you seen something like this with your

✨ This is the favorite breed of our children ✨ . The roosters are true gentleman gems — a beautiful example of how roos can and should behave. Sweet around children, communicative with the hens, and wonderfully chivalrous 💛 💎 Listen to his unique language and watch what happens when the ladies hear his call ❤️ 💎 This breed is called a bantam Cochin. They’re petite (hence getting lost in the grass 😂) and come in two feather types — smooth feathered like the rooster here, and frizzle feathered

🐣All The Eggs🐣 . Sometimes broody mamas will have such a strong nesting instinct they will try to steal all of the eggs from other birds in the coop. 🐣 We have all different sizes of hens we work with, a larger hen like this German Bielefelder could successfully hatch and raise a clutch of 12 chicks, this mama was going to take on toooooo much with all of these eggs! 💚 🐣 This mama likes to live with the azure Eggers, that is why she is sitting on blue eggs 😉 🐣 Pro tip, if you are going to

✨What Happens To Male Chicks?✨ . These male chicks hatched last Tuesday, they were the first we had available of 2024. We will have more males hatching tomorrow from our weekly hatch and every hatch in our season this year. ✨ We are a VERY small hatchery compared to the major ones in the United States so imagine this box of our males multiplied by hundreds of times and that is the amount of males that each one of the large scale hatcheries are hatching. ✨ I have been educating on this issue for
