Swift foxes are a burrowing fox native to the grasslands of the Great Plains and are small but mighty, only 5-7 lbs full-grown, and can reach speeds of 35-40 mph! They are what’s known as “key indicator species”, meaning their presence signals a healthy prairie environment! While their population took a major hit due to predator programs targeting wolves, they have since recovered significantly and currently occupy about 45% of their original historic range! | Endangered Wolf Center

This video of a swift fox den was captured this spring by South Gillette Game Warden Levi Wood. The swift fox is one of three fox species found in Wyoming, including the red fox and the gray fox found in the Black Hills. It is Wyoming's (and North America's) smallest canine, weighing in at just five to six pounds.
